Hah! It’s the end of my Language and ICT official posting. So, after posting all those posts, we are required to answer some of the questions. To evaluate? I bet..  But it’s good, isn’t it?

Ehem.. Would you mind me asking this question to you? Are you a Blog Obsessed?! Do you feel like you have to blog no matter what? Have you ever left behind something important like assignments, meeting or even your boyfriend/girlfriend just to blog?? Do you have more than 5 blogs or more than 3 entry per day??! Seriously guys!! If your answer is YES to all of those, well, I think you have to step back for a while from your blog and….. GET BACK TO YOUR LIFE!

But uh.. That case is not frequent enough I guess. Hahahaha! Am I going to talk about blog obsessed? Jeez.. Not at all! I just want to tell you how blog has improved me. Hei, check it out..

*Yawn* I think that is all for this time. Sayonara! Ow ya, just so you know, i canceled my date last night just to post this….

Pulling your leg. ^_^

{March 23, 2010}   Concordance..

Yay! Here I come again and this time  I am going to drop my little opinion of the task that has been given to me (well, to all my coursemate).

Have you ever heard of Concord Hotel?? Or perhaps you have stayed there?? Or you passes it by everyday on your way to work or school?? Or you are one of the hotel’s staff itself?? Or.. Or.. and many more “OR”..

Well, it is sad to tell you that I am not going to tell you about Concord Hotel, or to promote it, or to look for employees, or… ( i have to cut my “or” like, seriously..) I, in fact, am very glad to introduce you the topic of this post…… (sound effect a bit…)

CONCORDANCE!! ( of course, just look at the post title, genius….)

What is concordance? Obviously it has nothing to do with Concord Hotel. It is a database program tailored to legal applications. Concordance is primarily intended for organizing and searching depositions and electronic documents from discovery. Users can import documents, word processing files, e-mail, and create searchable text transcripts. Unlike most other database programs, Concordance supports file attachments, hyperlinks, and annotations, among other features. While traditional databases are more flexible, Concordance is better set up to be a document management system.

For more detail information about concordance, you can try clicking the link below.

http://www.dundee.ac.uk/english/conc2.htm

Here’s a cool concordance site that you can refer to.

www.edict.com.hk/concordance

So, let’s  see how it works… And… Taraaaaa….

Whoa… Cool, isn’t it?! Now, next question. ” How to use the concordance?”  Easy, Google it. Hehehe. Or, you can continue reading my post. I am so briliant, am I not.. *evil grin*

You have to find a concordancer eg.www.edict.com.hk/concordance.

You may also install it in your computer. > Select language. well, if you have that option > Enter or type the words that you want to concord with. > Select a corpus > Click ‘search’ button…… And you will get the result!

Happy trying…^_^

{March 16, 2010}   Online language test

So.. We’ve come to the next hint. Time flies real fast, huh..

This time I will  reveal to you some of the online language test that you can find in the internet (of course, it’s “online”).

Well, I’ve chosen a few sites for you to consider about (if you really are free and you want to make your brain occupied). Hehe.

Check it out!

So.. Let us explore one of the site and see what it offers.. Hmm, how about http://www.examenglish.com, buddy?

I’ll take that as a yes.. ^_*

And there we go! Here is the main page of the site. As you can see, we have a lot kind of test can be done here. There are TOEFL, CPE, CAE, FCE and so on. You can take the test of your desirable categories like vocabulary, grammar, listening, reading and not to mention you are doing this for GRATIS! Well, how about some review of the test?

This test is meant to identify your level of English. It has no time indicator and you only have about 20 questions to answer.

This test has the time indicator. Each question must be answered within 10 seconds or else your answer will be considered wrong. It also provides correction right away if your answer is wrong. Ulalala..

This one is to show you another structure of the test. It doesn’t have time indicator AND you can chose the answer more than one shot. So you can pick the right answer before move on to the next. Sounds so good for everybody. Hehehe

Huh! This is all going on so well. But what is it all about? Is it good to to take this kind of test (online test)?

We can’t get ourself carried away by the sounds-good-to-everybody test. In all things that we do, sure there will be the pros and con of it.  So, let us see the disadvantages and disadvantages of online test.

Taraaa… We’ve come to the end of it. Remember,in  anythng we do, we must do it moderately. Hope this hint has helped you somehow.

See ya!

{February 15, 2010}   social networking

Huyaaa,

I’ve been thinking about what to post here in my account. So i have given a task to discuss about the social networking. Here it is. Enjoy reading. ^_^

What is social networking?

Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is most popular online. This is because unlike most high schools, colleges, or workplaces, the internet is filled with millions of individuals who are looking to meet other people, to gather and share first-hand information and experiences about any number of topics. . . from golfing, gardening, developing friendships and professional alliances.

When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

One of the commonly used social networks is Facebook. Facebook is a social networking website intended to connect friends, family, and business associates. It is the largest of the networking sites, with the runner up being MySpace. It began as a college networking website and has expanded to include anyone and everyone.

Facebook users create a profile page that shows their friends and networks information about themselves. The choice to include a profile in a network means that everyone within that network can view the profile. The profile typically includes the following: Information, Status, Friends, Friends in Other Networks, Photos, Notes, Groups, and The Wall. Users are able to search for friends and acquaintances by e-mail address, school, university, or just by typing in a name or location for search. When people become friends, they are able to see all of each others’ profiles including contact information. E-mail notifications let users know when new friends have chosen to add them to their list or when someone has sent a message to them within the system.

A popular feature on Facebook is the ability to share photographs uploaded from a phone, camera, or hard drive. As with other private information, users have the option to allow only friends to see their pictures or anyone. There is an unlimited amount of storage available, which is a major advantage of Facebook’s photograph sharing capabilities. Groups can be created by users. These can include anything from grade school connections to hobbies and interests. Groups can be public and available to everyone or private, meaning only those invited can join and view discussions. Similarly, the Events feature allows friends to organize parties, concerts, and other get together in the real world. Users can also become fans of everything such as people, organizations, television shows, movies, and musicians.

There are countless applications available to add to a profile. They range from a list of Top Friends to movie compatibility with others, and maps of where users have traveled. These applications are created by individuals outside of Facebook’s employment who are known as Developers. Users of Facebook can share news stories, video, and other files with friends. Most news and video websites have buttons that can be clicked to automatically share the story or video on a feed. The person sharing can make comments about the shared item that their friends will see. Personal notes can also be written and shared with friends. When sharing an item, users can attach the item to their Wall for all to see, or can tag individual people that they think would be most interested in seeing the item. When a user is tagged, they receive an e-mail notification.

The other popular social network is Twitter.

The short format of the tweet is a defining characteristic of the service, allowing informal collaboration and quick information sharing that provides relief from rising email and IM fatigue. Twittering is also a less gated method of communication: you can share information with people that you wouldn’t normally exchange email or IM messages with, opening up your circle of contacts to an ever-growing community of like-minded people.

You can send your messages using the Twitter website directly, as a single SMS alert, or via a third-party application such as Twirl, Snitter, or the Twitterfox add-on for Firefox. Your tweets are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each of your followers, and in the Twitter public timeline (unless you disable this in your account settings.)

Which social network is better?

Personally, I have both of the social network, facebook and twitter. But I prefer facebook most. Facebook appeals to social animals and can be very addicting to people who have an insatiable appetite to stay connected with friends and make new acquaintances. In fact, I rarely use email or IM tools anymore in my online social communications, relying almost entirely on Facebook for email, chat, image and video sharing.

I prefer Facebook as my most used social network. Facebook gives me a single alternative to all applications, with one login and interface to manage my online social interaction needs. This largely explains the explosive growth Facebook continues to experience and the reason why most of my other friends, too, choose this application.

However, I do not really have the same idea about the twitter. Even though I have twitter account, I seldom use it in any way whether in business or socializing. I have found some of twitter disadvantages that I do not really like. They are:

  • Limited functionality; find people, send brief messages, direct replies
  • Limited to 140 characters per update
  • Over-emphasis on follower counts
  • Easily abused for spam and increasing the noise level
  • Relatively smaller installed user base
  • As yet no readily apparent monetization strategy

Or perhaps, I am too comfortable with Facebook already so I prefer it more than twitter. I have been using Facebook much longer than the twitter. So, it could be the reason. I found my friends are going for the same idea with me b y choosing fecabook over twitter.

So, it’s the end of my hint for this time. See you in the next post.

lot of luv,

Veron.
